Project Number:  K-ETH-2017-4055

Project TimeframeOne Year (August 15, 2017 to July 31, 2018)

Funding Organization: Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe (DKH)

Location of the project: Afar region, Aysaita and Berhale Refugee camps

Through the proposed interventions in the project entitled “Enhanced Resilience of Eritrean Refugees in Aysaita and Berhale Camps, Ethiopia”, humanitarian response employed and risk reduction will be addressed by improving the food and nutrition status of the target refugee households. 400 new households, together with an expected up to 50% of 400 previously supported will be trained in vegetable growing using the Multi-Storey Gardening (MSG) approach as well as enable the new beneficiaries to practice gardening on small plots of land. Specifically, the 400 HHs will be supported in production and sale of extra vegetables. Additionally, 30 unemployed youth will be trained on briquette-making as a business to create and provide clean cooking fuel to both refugees and host communities. The briquettes will be manufactured from branches of the Prosopis Juliflora tree. The tree is an invasive species which grows extensively in the area and has spread to cover most of the land, including arable areas. The tree will be managed through pruning of the branches to produce the briquettes in a sustainable manner.
